I was consulting with an organization Every Child Achieves, whose purpose was to help children two years of age and older who had physical and emotional difficulties. I was asked to pay a home visit with a therapist who was working with a three year old girl. One of the concerns was her “terror” when being around men she did not know.

I walked into her house with her female therapist who she greeted warmly, then she saw me, and went into terror, screaming, crying, trying to hide from me. I never had such a response as children usually enjoy being in my presence.

She eventually sat down on the floor with her therapist as I sat on a nearby couch. She kept staring at me with concern and fear, ensuring I didn’t come any closer to her.

Terror happens when a person feels they have no control over what they perceive to be a dangerous situation – my being a male stranger r triggered her terror. I know what I had to do was help her know could control me.

She kept looking at me as she worked with the therapist. After a couple of minutes when she looked at me, I gestured to ask if I could move to the right of where I was sitting, she very determinedly shook her head no, and I with exaggerated no motion, did not move. I did this a couple of times, and the third time she slowly moved her head in a yess motion, and I moved to my right very slowly. I followed this procedure two more times, and saw she began to feel more comfortable in my space.

I then gestured to ask if I could sit on the floor next to her, and she shook her head “no!”. And with an exaggerated motion stayed where I was. I did this a couple of times and on my third request to move closer she gestured with her head, “yes”. I sat on the floor some distance from her and on a gradient she agreed to allow me to come closer – her fear had vanished as she knew she could control me.

When it was time to say goodbye she hugged her female therapist then started to walk to me to give me a hug, but as she got closer to me she changed mind and waved goodbye. The mom and therapist were amazed by her willingness to have me in her space.

I understood what was causing her terror response, she had a lack of belief she could have any control of me – I made sure she knew she could be in control.

Not knowing what to do that is best in terms of a career path may not induce terror, but can result in a lasting fear where one does not feel truly fulfilled and is leading a compromised life.

Here is a comment from someone who received the Foundation of Brilliance (FoB) consultation. “The program gave me great stability in life. I knew I was confused and thanks to this program I got answers to many questions, I came out of a cloud of confusion and I understood what I didn’t want to do and what my aspiration was. I would say it gave me great stability! After finishing this program I tripled my work production in just 48 hours! I have established my PURPOSE which was not clear. I have seen a number of positives aspects about myself that I took for granted. I brought out an old dream in the drawer that I had forgotten and deleted. I am ready for a new life! I absolutely recommend to all people to do the FOB program, it’s definitely an extraordinary program!” Serina

Does this look like a person who would induce terror in someone?
