“Where much is expected of an individual, he [she] may rise to the level of events to make the dream come true.” Elbert Hubbard
Fable – A short typically supernatural story conveying a moral.
===================================
When I first read the fable below it really impacted me to a point of shedding tears; this has often been true for those I share it with. As you read the following fable, what do you think is the moral of the story and why am I sharing it.
A Chinese Fable
A water bearer in China had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole that he carried across his neck. One pot had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his house.
Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect for which it was made.
But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream… “I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.”
The bearer said to the pot, “Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s side?” That’s because I have always known about your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side of the path. Every day while we walk back, you’ve watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. “Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.”
This fable is often used to help parents of children who are born with a physical handicap; parents who may see their hopes and dreams shattered for the life they hoped to enjoy with their newborn. It is so easy, and understandable. to focus on the negatives and difficulties, but by also focusing on what’s good and right, one can truly make a positive difference in the life of the child.
This principle of only focusing on what is good and right about the people I consult when delivering my Foundations of Brilliance program, has been a major reason for the success of the program. Have you ever spent several hours with someone only telling them what is good and right about you? It is both very enlightening and gratifying.
“He [Bernard] is also one of the nicest people I have ever met. I would recommend everyone from kids to adults to the elderly to listen to … [do the consultation with] him because you will surely discover things about yourself that you didn’t know and have a better idea of your career path.”
