Here is how I am defining a moment of magic:
A moment when you realized with certainty your life was going to majorly change for the better, and it did.”
As I was thinking about this article I started to review my life, and think about what were those truly magic moments in my life. I am VERY HAPPY to say I found so many it was hard to select a few to present in this article.

Here is a very partial list of mine, what are yours?

  • The very first kiss with my wife Caralyn in June of 1972. We were teachers and our rooms were across the hall from each other. Over the school year from 1971 to 1972 we started our friendship that kept blossoming into something more. Then on the last day of the school year we finally kissed and I so vividly remember how impacting that was. I KNEW we were going to be together for a lifetime, if not longer. WOW! MAGIC!
  • When Caralyn told me she was pregnant with each of our daughters in 1975, 1979 and 1984. Each time when I found out I was going to be a dad I knew how much that would change my life for the better. They are three of the happiest and most magical moments in my life. WOW! MAGIC!
  • In 1974 when Ann, my 4th grade student, spoke to me at the start of the next school year about a book she was writing. That moment truly changed my life. Ann told me she was writing an advice book for parents. She felt parents should get advice from children, not just other adults, about how to grow a child. One of the first lines I read in her manuscript was, “Look into your child and you shall see your reflection.” I asked Ann if she would like to get this book published and with her agreement she and five of my other students wrote the book. It was first published in 1978, then republished in 2009 with three of the original students, now that they were parents, commenting on the advice they gave as children. The moment with Ann started me on a completely different path in life that resulted in eight books being published, traveling across the world, and on and on. WOW! MAGIC!
  • My first trip to China in 1987 when we landed in Beijing. I was going to be a “professor” at a university in China helping English as a second language teachers learn how to be more effective as teachers. When the plane landed in Beijing at 2:00 a.m. I still remember the excitement I felt about being there, I “knew” this is something I am meant to do. Over the years I have traveled to over 40 countries, and traveled close to two million miles, and it all really started with that first trip to China. WOW! MAGIC!
  • In 1998 when I realized I had found my dream job and knew it was going to become a reality. I had been working as a freelance consultant and independent contractor making a lot of money, but was very unhappy. I knew what I was doing was not really something that helped me feel fulfilled and joyful in my work. Then I was asked to be the co-founder and editor in chief of a magazine on education and technology (computers, etc.). At first I was very interested but not sure it was the right job for me. After a series of events I fully understood what I really wanted to do in my professional career, i.e., my purpose. When I came up with the wording for my purpose I felt as if I was floating in the air, I KNEW this was the right career path for me. It wasn’t easy, and indeed there were difficulties, but I was surely inspired and interested in my work. WOW! Magic!
  • In 2003 the moment I realized what I could do to help others really know what was the right career and educational path that would bring them the sense of fulfillment and satisfaction we all want from our work and studies. I developed a program, THE FOUNDATIONS OF BRILLIANCE, which has been delivered to thousands of people across the globe over the years. That moment during a consultation when the person fully realizes what the right path is for their career, has also always been wonderful moments of magic for me. WOW! MAGIC!
