A twilight zone experience is one that breaks the bonds of reality, something amazing happened that cannot be explained, it can be sinister or dangerous because of its uncertainty, unpredictability or ambiguity. Or in the Brooklyn way of explaining it, “What the #$%^%%# was that?”
In 1974 with my soon to be wife Caralyn, a friend Phil, and I were driving through Ohio on the way to Los Angeles, where among other things Caralyn and I were going to be married. It was around midnight and Caralyn was driving. I was dozing in the front passenger seat next to Caralyn, and was too tired to stay awake to be there for Caralyn as she drove through the night.
Within a minute of closing my eyes there was a loud bang and the car was swerving all over the road as Caralyn was trying to gain control of it. The car crashed through a road barrier, flipped onto the roof as we went down an embankment. We ended up with the car on the opposite side of the highway, with the roof on the ground and the front of the car in the speed lane of oncoming traffic.

This is how the car looked when it came to a stop (this is not a photo of the actual car).
Phil was thrown out of the car and hurt his knee, I had hurt my right elbow, Caralyn had no injuries, just broken glass in her car. The state troopers and ambulance arrived very quickly, and as Phil and I were being treated in the ambulance Caralyn spoke with the state troopers. The car was totaled and we were taken to a motel for the evening.
NOW COMES THE TWILIGHT ZONE MOMENT, THE STRANGEST MOMENT I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED.
The next morning the three of us were at breakfast when Caralyn related what the state troopers had told her after the accident.
There had been an accident the week before in the exact same spot and the driver had been killed as his car hit the road barrier to prevent the car from going down the embankment and he died of head injuries. We crashed through that road guard as the damage had not been repaired. A week before another car crashed about hundred yards from where we went down the embankment, and there was a creek there and the driver was killed as he went into a creek and drowned. So in two weeks there were three accidents with two resulting in the death of the drivers. These were all nearly in the same spot of Interstate 70, a straight stretch of road with no road hazards.
That was so unreal to all three of us, AND THEN IT HAPPENED, the strangest moment I have ever had.
We were eating breakfast in a restaurant in Newark, Ohio, a place we had never been to. A woman in the booth next to ours taps me on the shoulder and asks if I was Bernard Percy. WHAT THE HELL, how did she know my name? She then proceeds to tell me details that there was no way she could have known. For example, “You were headed to California from Brooklyn where you and Caralyn were going to get married.”
I was reeling with amazement, uncertainty and fear, I was in the twilight zone.
How could she know those details, and this was immediately after Caralyn told us about the strange coincidence of the three accidents on the same stretch of road. She continued, “Your car was hit by a drunk driver.” How the hell could she know those things.
I gathered up the courage to ask her how she knew these things and asked her with a GREAT DEAL of trepidation about what she was going to say.
It turns out we were the main news main story on the Newark, Ohio local radio station. When we walked i to the restaurant, Caralyn who is black, Phil was walking with a cane and my arm was bandaged. Caralyn had told the state troopers the details of what was broadcast on the news station, so it was obvious who we were.
That moment before we found out the truth of how she knew what she knew was truly a twilight zone experience.
I would love to hear if you ever had a twilight zone experience, and what it was.
My Foundations of Brilliance consultation which results in individuals having the certainty of the career or education path that is right for them, does not have a twilight zone effect. But one that brings certainty, enlightenment and joy. Here are comments of two people who recently completed their consultation:
I decided to do the Foundations of Brilliance program with Bernard. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. I ended up going on this magical path with him guiding me down positive twists and turns. I ended up in a magical place knowing exactly what I am here to do on this planet. It was a wonderful feeling and experience. I want everyone to do it too!!!!! Linda
